Hello everybody,

Longtime reader, first time poster. I've really enjoyed and appreciated all of the advice and information shared here, so thank you everybody for that.

Now, on to my question.

I've been planning out my undergraduate coursework recently and besides the basic premedical classes, I was wondering what the overall sentiment may be about the usefulness/effectiveness of these particular minors:

Economics
Statistics
Philosophy
Communications
Business

My plan is to do Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (which is just a single degree at my school) and then pick up Statistics, Philosophy, or Communications as a minor; or take Business or Economics classes (no minor is actually offered for either of those, I would just take some classes).

I am very interested in all of those topics, so as much as I would like to just pick the one that interests me the most, I'm interested in them all relatively equally.

Anyway, any opinions would be wonderful.

Thanks again.

All minors are useless. Take courses that interest you.

No. Minors can be helpful for the MCAT (especially the new one).

Don't know much about the new MCAT. If additional coursework is required, take the courses, but having the credential of a minor does nothing for you, especially if you have to go out of your way to get it.

It's not that I'm taking the minor because it would necessarily be useful, I want to take the minor with the most relevant coursework that would help on the MCAT/Med school/etc.

I guess so. Some schools (like mine) gave preference to students declaring specific majors/minors. For example at my school it was almost impossible for a non philosophy major (or minor) to get into certain ethics classes.

My point is skip the minor and just take the courses. Unless it works out to be the same thing, in which case get the minor too.

Yeah, I understand that. I suppose I'm asking more which subject would be the most useful?

I was agreeing with you. I just pointed out that at some schools you may not have access to some courses if you aren't in the program.

I agree.

Statistics if you plan to do some research in the future.

Business if you want to open up your own practice.

Economics to know more about how things work.

Philosophy to win more internet arguments.

Or just take what's interesting to you. 😛

Psychology will be on the new MCAT. Wait when are you taking it? new mcat isn't until 2015.

If you take it this year (2013) or next, take some critical reasoning / literature courses to buff up on your reading / analysis skills.

I am planning on taking the MCAT in 2015, and I already have planned on taking a couple of psychology classes.
