Has anyone heard bacl from OHSU?? They told us at the interview that the admissions committee would meet last week! Arrrggghhh....I hate it when they keep us waiting. 🙂

I called last Friday to make sure that my application came up for review last week. They said it did and that I would be getting word in the mail at the end of this week or beginning of next. Hopefully tomorrow?

They said that they review every Thursday and that last Thursday was the first day that decisions were being made...Quick questions for you guys (manic & ormd), when did you interview? If you were in the first groups of interviewees, I am sure you will find out either today or tomorrow...best wishes,

I think it was November 22nd. Last thursday was the first time the ad com met, so we should have all been up for review if our interviewers got the evals in on time. I hope we all get in!!!

Post as soon as y'all know...

Congrats on getting interviews to OHSU if you got them, guys. I myself am an Oregon resident who did research at OHSU summer between junior/senior year, got a 35 MCAT and had a 3.81 GPA, Phi Beta Kappa, college athlete.... and got no interview at OHSU last year. I ended up getting into Tufts and Tulane, and I am a first year at one of those, but I was pretty pissed at no interview. Also, my roommate from college (3.75ish, 36 MCAT, Phi Beta Kappa, OR resident also, dad graduated from OHSU) got an interview last year, but decided to wait a year and reapplied this year.... no interview. He ended up getting into Colorado and Vermont as an out of state applicant.

What is my point? It's that it's a crap shoot getting into med school in general, but especially at OHSU. I'm not convinced they have their **** together with their admissions process. So if you get in, congrats... it's a good med school, and will be cheaper (albeit not too much) than private schools. But if not, keep your head up, and don't let it get you down.... it doesn't mean you're not qualified. Good luck with the process, it's not fun I know, but worth it in the end once you get in.

I heard from them on Dec 28th. Waitlisted!

I heard too...hold pool. I think I was too bummed to post. I know it's not a rejection or even a waitlist yet (they pull quite a few people from this pool in march before they rank the waitlist), but it felt like my best damn interview. Both went way over the time limits. Agh. This process drives one to drink heavily.

manic and mhiro - when did you guys interview and when did you hear from OHSU? sorry if i have already asked this question. from what i remember, they said that they have good movement off the hold list, so don't lose hope...you'll be fine.

manic, yes you did say when you interviewed...so, i guess, for you, when did you hear that you were on hold? and mhiro, ty willingham is a god. the FULL return to glory will be happening soon...as I picture good ol' Ty kissing the Sears trophy within the next couple of years...

Chronic,

I heard about a month after I interviewed with a letter, but had called before that. If you talk to Jennifer in admissions, she should be able to look up your status on the computer. I know we interviewed at about the same time...did you get good news??

Hope so...

I still haven't heard from them...Did they tell you your status when you called, or that simply your file had been reviewed? Also, how did they notify you? by mail? or email? Thanks...and good luck!

They told me my status when I called. I called once before that and hadn't talked to Jennifer and the woman just told me that I'd been reviewed. The second time, Jennifer looked me up on the computer and told me that I'd been placed in the 'hold' pile and that I'd be getting a letter in a few weeks. You should call if you're curious.

Supposedly it works like this: The first groups of interviewees are reviewed and the top (not sure on the exact percent) 10% are given acceptances according to their score. Then, as the season goes on, the cuttoff score lowers and more and more people are accepted every round of committee meetings. I read that last year, they had approximately 60 of the 100 spots filled before the last review in march and then accepted a huge chunk before the fill deadline. After that, they rank the waitlist and if you haven't heard anything, you'll be notified mid-may of your waitlist placement.

More waiting. 🙄 hate it hate it hate it.

manic,

do you know the phone number that I should call? i got no clue...thanks for your help!

I called (503) 494-8220. You'll get the Dean's office. Ask to speak to Jennifer in Medical School Admissions. You won't have to wait though that longass message that discourages you from talking to a human. Jennifer is normally really nice. If someone else takes the call, they may not choose to let you know your status over the phone, just to warn you. Good luck...I'll check back in tomorrow.

I got waitlisted too! Got my letter on Dec 26th. Merry Christmas to me I guess.........

Congrats ORMDwannabe! Hopefully it will mean eventual good news for all of us.

I hope so Manic. Jennifer the admissions lady said that they accept a bunch of people off the hold list, but it usually doesn't happen till April or May. If you are in the same situation as me, you will have to send deposit checks to the other schools you've been accepted too if you don't hear from OHSU, and then risk losing the deposit if OHSU accepts you after May 15th. So...hopefully they make up their minds quickly. Does anyone know when they review the people on the hold list or make any further decisions regarding admissions?

Jennifer kind of explained this to me during my interview. (I was the only one there that day...kind of creepy.)

80% of your final admissions score is based on your interview and other soft criteria and 20% is based on your numbers. After your interview, the committee scores you as an applicant and the group accepts the top like 10% of the group for that round. As the months pass, the cut off score typically goes down and they start to pull people out of the hold pile that are within the new acceptable range for admissions. So we may be pulled before may, but looking at some threads from last year, most hold applicants did not hear until April/May. Keep hope...we may not have to lose those deposits at other schools.

Not to scare anyone, but my experience with OHSU was that they have a tendency to string people along until the very end. I am sure you are all highly qualified applicants and I hope that you are all accepted, but my experience with the admissions process at OHSU was horrible. I chose a different route this year (osteopathic schools) and am very pleased with the way I was treated throughout the admissions process, and I am happy to say that I will be attending an osteopathic medical school next year. Last year I interviewed at OHSU (one of my best interviews, I even had email correspondence with my interview afterward) and about a month later I was placed in the hold pool. My next correspondence from the school wasn't until the end of May (5 months later!), at which time I was rejected. After going through the whole process a second year in a row, and seeing how the osteopathic schools treat their applicants, I can say I have restored faith in the medical school admissions process. I can also say that, after seeing how things are run at different schools, the process that OHSU uses could be improved immensely. I just wanted to share a little insight with you all, esp. after going through the process twice now. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope you all get in!

I had my best interview at OHSU as well. I have been pretty pissy with their process. Especially with one ad com person in particular who has been unneccessarily rude throughout. It's no longer my first choice and I hope to god I get in to this other school so I can tell oregon to f- off. Congratulations on your admission. I'm sure ohsu made a big mistake by not letting you in.

this is a stupid random process

Manic,

Thanks...I would like to think that they made a mistake by not accepting me, but who knows with med school admissions. All I know is that OHSU has turned down a lot of great applicants that I know and they don't seem to have a great reputation among the people I have talked to. And after everything I have read about med schools, I still am not quite sure what they are looking for in an applicant!

Anyone else have any stories about OHSU? I personally know quite a few people who have horror stories from Oregon, so I was just wondering if others have had the same bad luck with them.
