Hey, a couple months back I sent a letter of intent to a school basically stating that if offered an interview and subsequently a seat in the class that I would turn down my other offers without hesitation. However, I recently got accepted to another school that I really didn't expect to, and would rather attend over the school I sent my letter of intent to. Would cancelling my interview (explaining reasoning in a formal/apologetic letter) at this point burn all bridges with this school? Would it prevent any opportunities to specialize there? Do schools actually remember names/keep records of these letters? Thanks in advance for any insight!

Most likely would burn bridges, but who cares..? You go in to another school

Lol.

Of course you'll burn bridges by telling every school they are your number one choice. Goes with the territory.

Well, hopefully they have a short memory when you apply to residency in 4 years.

They will be able to see in 4 years that they made you an offer and you turned it down. The LoI will probably be on file as well. As long as you weren't planning on going there for residency I don't think it matters.

Even if he is applying for residency there a whole new department for post doc admissions will be in charge. Doubt they will keep all paper work .

Attend the interview at the very least. After that you can know for sure to not attend there. And they can't blame you, LOI and all.

I second this post but not just because it makes you look good but because I think it's always a good idea to keep your options open. See the school and who knows? You may change your mind.

If it will cost you a lot of $$, don't go to the interview. If you apply for a residency program there, they won't know about your LOI or whatever else you're worried about. The school probably didn't even care about your LOI anyways, if they even read it.

Things come up and situations change. They understand this. Don't waste your time nor their's if you have no intention to attend their for DS; that would burn more of a bridge, IMO. Just send them a formal/apologetic letter stating that your situation has changed, and that you'd like your app withdrawn.
