Hello, I am wondering in the possible case that I have to retake the MCAT due to it being expired (if my first app cycle doesn't pan out the way I want it to, I will be forced to retake due to the 3 year rule most schools have regarding the MCAT) how much would it hurt if my score dropped?

I have a balanced 519 but if let's say I got a 515 or 516 on a retake how much would that hurt? This is assuming that 515/516 are the median MCATs of the schools I am aiming for.

If you took the new MCAT, which only became available earlier this year, how will it be more than three years old next cycle...?
Just in case he doesn't get in?

And they say I'm neurotic...

Haha I'm not as confident because my GPA is well below the matriculant average so naturally I'm concerned that there's a chance that I might have to reapply.

Any other opinions or advice welcome

FWIW, I would interpret a drop in MCAT score as an indication that the applicant might be lazy or complacent -- studied hard the first time but didn't bother for the retake. Or forgot all the material learned years ago. Or that the first score wasn't an accurate measure of applicant's ability.

In short - don't let it fall more than a point or two.

Look on the bright side- you got a good score with mediocre prep material. If you have to take again in 3+ years the prep material will be better. Are you planning a post bacc or SMP?

Many schools look at the most recent score. Others average. Either way, a 519 -> 515 in't lethal.

With a 519, you should do everything to make sure our first app cycle is successful, IMO!

the recent score will be the important one
