When in studying mode say for usmle or any national medical examine. What is the most amount of qs you guys do in one day including going over the explanations? {I mean there is always one guy claiming doing 500 qs per day from 6am to 12 midnight.} But what are the honest answers to this ?

I tried to do 150-200 in a day plus studying. I think that is reasonable and keeps you from getting too fatigued.

3-5 hours studying, 50-100 questions. That's about all I can do these days.

When should the drilling begin? I mean truthfully, when should we start actually studying for it? I'm planning on taking in June (towards the end)

Most people take from four to six weeks to review for USMLE Step I. You should be doing active review when reviewing as opposed to just drilling (pretty useless since you have to apply concepts on USMLE Step I).

That being said, there are a few things that have to be memorized just long enough to write them down on the dry erase board. The Pharm formulas come to mind and a couple of epi equations. Other than those, the rest of the stuff is understanding and knowing concepts well as opposed to rote drilling and memorization.

The "Do questions and then review answers" is a good study method as long as you are getting the purpose behind the questions and not trying to memorize specific answers. As Blade said, this is usually more time consuming and you are likely to cover 50-100 questions in 3-5 hours as opposed to doing huge amounts of questions and answers.

Lot's of reviewing for UMSLE Step I is your individual style and how you like to cover material. The rote memorizers will tend to panic when they attempt to memorize mountains of material. Sometimes the reviewers will not cover enough. You have to strike a balance that works for you, make a realistic schedule and stick to it.

Do as well as possible in your classes for now.
Then start adding some review here and there around Jan or Feb. Just do a little bit at a time when you can squeeze it in between your other classwork. Then, study hardcore for your final exams and rock them. Add in some time for pure Step 1 review right after finals and then ace Step 1.

That is just my advice. Start browsing the Step 1 forum now if you want to get a jump on things. I would recommend the "Step 1 experiences" thread for an idea of what others did to prepare.
