These have always been one of those annoying thorns in my foot.

They should be easy to remember but I almost always seem to mix them up. When answering a question regarding defense mechansims, right when think I've got the correct mechanism, the correct answer is some other [sometimes closely related] mechanism.

For those who've taken the Step 1, did you encounter any of these types of questions?

I did not get one question on defense mechanisms and I was bummed because I finally understood the difference between sublimation and reaction formation. I think it helps to group them into mature and immature, it kind of helps differentiate between the ones that are similar. For example, if I wasn't sure if something was sublimation or reaction formation, I reread the scenario and thought, is this person displaying a mature reaction or immature (just a gut feeling judgment call). That helped determine which one it was. I would obviously try to get comfortable with it but there are way higher yield things to spend your time on so don't worry too much.

Uhhh... yeah. I started today with USMLEWORLD with behavioral sciences-- those questions are incredibly hard.
