defer admission

so i checked with my pod school and found i can have my admission deferred.
im in a bit of a bind, a part of me wants to go ahead and start grad school and figures ill be able to travel later.

but then a part of me thinks, this time wont come again. i have a "blah" job right now that pays pretty good--- i can work, save money, and travel for a good 4-5 months in 2009 and see the freaking world.

any opinions on this matter??

Sorry I can't really offer any advice, but how far ahead of time were you able to defer your admission? I'm wondering if I could apply this summer for the Fall 2009 cycle and defer acceptance until the Fall 2010 semester...

i know exactly what you're going through except i dont have a high paying job lol. fortunately with pod you can defer and they won't really care.

i think i am going to defer as well. i'm only gonna be young once and shouldnt be in a rush to grow up and get a job. theres a lot of things i want to do with my time off: compete in a martial arts tourney, chase women, travel a little bit and i know if i'm in school i wont have time to do these things (with the exception of chasing women) and will only be able to do them once i'm done with residency and by that time i will be out of shape and older so competeting would be difficult.

i've havent heard of one complaining that they took a year off to enjoy, but i've heard many complain that they wish they would have. i also read an article that said many students were so focused on hurrying and getting their MD that once they got it they were like "ok... now what?" and were disappointed. but make sure you are busy because that year off can be awfully boring if you're doing nothing.

I don't think that would work. As more and more applicants begin to apply I think schools will not offer as many deferred applications. I of course am just speculating. I applied in early 2006 and was accepted to Scholl in January of 2007. I deferred my application in May, but I had to write a letter stating why and that reason had to be good enough for the admissions committee to honor it. Schools may be bit easy going on the deferred applications right now but I think once the applicant pool gets to a certain point it will be harder to offer these unless you are an exceptional student who they really want and will do anything to try and keep.

But if it is what you want you can always try it, the worst that would happen would be that they don't allow it. Good luck.

Here is the first complaint you've heard...I hate my year off. I cannot wait to go back this fall. The travel sucks because I'm uberpoor. I expect after residency, I can stay in nicer hotels...and not pull the hostel thing again.

It's boring. I wish I would have just gone for 2011...but alas! Only 90 days left of mindless days playing Trauma Center: New Blood on my Wii...

I think that you should travel now when you're young, if you can afford it. If I had the money to spare, I would probably do that as well! Besides, once you're in residency you're going to have all those really big debt numbers hanging over your head, and I don't know about you, but I'm not sure I could enjoy vacationing (i.e. basically wasting money) when I had so much to pay back. Travel is awesome, and I was lucky to be able to do a lot of it as an undergrad. I say take the opportunities when they come, because you never know if they'll come again.

And yes, it might be tougher to get a deferment in the future, but I bet you could get one now. May as well check with your school, it can't hurt.

Also, after you get out of school and residency you may get married and want to have kids, and I think it may be difficult to travel during that time. I would take the opportunity now, while it is available.

ok, so i think its official--- ill be attending schoolage in the fall.

but on the plus side--- im going to thailand, malaysia, and china for a last minute summer excursion.

off topic: but if anyone is scuba certified, do U HAVE to have PADI certification to scuba or do some ppl "look the other way"

In some developing countries I know they will look the other way. However I'd get PADI certified if it's possible. That way you'll get all the training you'll need, and you won't be limited to going to the more shady diving establishments that will dive without your certification. They could have bad air/equipment, etc.

There'll be plenty of opportunities to travel the world. I know that when I went to Hawaii & Europe before I started school, I couldn't enjoy myself without thinking about $$$. I couldn't afford very much except for the plane ticket, hotel, and some pizza. You'll have Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks for personal time for the first two years, but you kind of are in a time crunch for the second year when you get closer to boards in the summer. But if you have money now to travel, better do it before gas prices get any higher. However, if you don't have money, like myself, don't feel like you'll never have the time, you will! The world isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
