Hi everyone,

There hasn't been much on this topic so I thought I'd see if I could get some input. I got accepted into a few dental schools and put my deposit down at NYU recently. But, I also got onto the waitlist at Columbia (which is my first choice). Does anyone know what the possibility is of asking to be considered for the following class? That way if I don't get accepted this cycle into Columbia I could be guarenteed a spot in the next class. Also, I was thinking of trying to defer for a year anyway since since my fiance is working abroad next year and I'd like to see if I could do a volunteer experience abroad at the same time. Please let me know if any of you have deferred for a year or heard of anyone doing something like this. I'd appreciate any thoughts! Thanks!

You use can't defer at all. Call the school and find out. But you are doing something quite sneaky and I wouldnt be suprised if it blew up in your face. Theres enough students out there that deserve your spot.

Are you talking about being considered for Columbia's next class or deferring your NYU acceptance? In any case, wait, you want to deffer starting ds on the off chance of doing "volunteer experience abroad"?

From my understanding of deferring, you need a really good reason to even be considered for it. Like a family emergency or something.

I think if students could defer acceptances willy-nilly then half of us would be doing it, so we can go travel, waste time, or try to get into a school we didn't manage to this time 'round. Alas, look at how many students actually defer. Very few. You need a genuine, substantially good reason to do it, especially one that lands far away from "I'm on the waitlist for a school that I like MORE than yours. Neener neener. Give me a break!"

I'm talking about being considered for Columbia's next class. I've heard of people getting an offer from a school to be in the following class simply because they didn't have room in that cycle but they still wanted to offer admission to the student. Has anyone heard of anyone actually requesting to be considered for the next class year? That way the school would see how badly you wanted to attend there, even if that meant waiting for the next year.

umm... I'm not sure that's how it works. You can't defer unless you've already been accepted. And a school doesn't accept a candidate to their next class simply because you request them to. Maybe it's just me, but this whole thing sounds silly. If this was possible, every kid on a wait-list would ask their school to accept them into their next class while traveling for a year. If a school wants you really really bad, they will make room for you. Telling a candidate they don't have any spots for you in this class is a nice way of saying "we have candidates we think are better at the moment".

And if these sort of situations do happen, I would assume the school reaches out to the candidate letting them know they want them for the next class... not the other way around.

I guess it's a worth a shot since you already have an acceptance in hand, although I wouldn't personally do it for my own reasons.

Your reasons are not valid enough to defer. Your also screwing over other applicants by holding a seat in a school where you have zero intention of attending. If you dont want to go to NYU then you should be fair and honest to yourself and withdraw. If you dont get into Columbia then reapply next year.

yes you can defer, I did, and they usually ask you for a written letter explaining why once you have been accepted, as well as a deposit of usually $1000
