Is it possible to defer payment of principle while you are doing fellowship?
I have about 160k in debt from medical school. I did a federal consolidated loan when I started residency and chose the interest only payment for 4 years while I did my residency in obgyn. But I will be starting a mfm fellowship next year and would like to continue to just pay interest or some other minimum amount until I make the real money after fellowship.
Thanks in advance for your answers.

Depending on the type of fellowship you are going into - it may be eligible for the Graduate Fellowship Deferment, but you would want to check with your program director to find out if your situation qualifies. If so - contact your lender for the necessary paperwork.

Otherwise - if you are interested in just paying down the interest - you should have the option of choosing a Graduated or Income Sensitive repayment plan that would allow you to pay as low as interest only during times that you aren't able to suffice the entire payment.

Hope that helps!

I think you can qualify for a hardship forbearance since your income will be so much less than your debt level. Unfortunately, interest will accrue since it's a forbearance and not a deferment.
