This question is primarily directed at admitted undergraduates going straight to vet school. What would you do with your year away from school if you decided to defer? If you're out of state where you intend to attend, the answer might be pretty clear. However, if you do not need to gain state residency or that is not an issue, what would you do?

I would go to Africa and climb mount Kilimanjaro or go to Spain and practice my Spanish or maybe join the Peace Corps.
Seriously, I would just live a little because God know none of us are going to do too much living in veterinary school and most of us were working too hard during undergraduate to be terribly wild.
I did have a year “off” between undergraduate and veterinary school only because I did not apply to veterinary school until the summer after I graduated.
A week after I finished my last final I was on a plane to the Brazilian Rainforest. When I came back I got a job (at a vet clinic), took a few classes, and spent a lot of time with my husband and my dogs, did a lot of camping, and just enjoyed life for a while. Of course I couldn’t let loose like I could have had I already been accepted somewhere as I was still in the depths of the application process.
As an aside, I think you generally need to have a fairly good reason to ask for a deferment meaning if it was granted you most likely would be doing something highly constructive or dealing with some sort of life crisis.

I was thinking this too....my understanding is that deferments are extremely rare. Unless you literally almost die you're not getting one. Leave of absence (after being in a year) I think is a somewhat different matter.

About what I'd do...I really don't know b/c its beyond my comprehension at this point. I managed to do a lot of traveling with school and other associations while in highschool and undergrad, so I'm pretty good for now. My mindset is really totally too focused to think about anything but medicine.

I guess I could go about learning another dead language...fun times
