Based on the definition of deferment I don't think you should count it as a rejection. It seems more like they're going to go through more applications first and then review your app again. Maybe you'll score an interview for the waitlist and make it in that way; it's not over 'til it's over.

Anyway, I got the email from Iowa stating "deferred" on 7/31 - then AADSAS update from Iowa shows app complete / under review - posted on 8/13, so maybe there is still hope
Wait. Iowa is listed on AADSAS for you? Like under the School Decisions tab? It's not there for me. Also, I just realized that I haven't actually heard from them since I applied. Uh oh. Did they send a supplemental app or anything?
I spoke with someone in admissions about the deferred status, and she said it was definitely not a rejection. She said that my app is under continued review
