Deferring acceptance?

I've heard people talk about deferring acceptance to different types of programs. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this and what types of reasons are considered appropriate for a deferral? Why would someone want to defer? Do you have to reapply to the school in which you have deferred? Just curious.

It appears that I've wandered into the wrong forum, being that I'm a medical school kid, but I can answer your question from my perspective. I sent a letter to the dean of admissions that explained my reasons for desiring a deferral: I've never traveled outside of the country, I'm an engineer that wanted to read some good books that my undergrad curriculum did not allow me the time to do, I want to bone up on my Spanish for my med school's Medical Spanish program, etc. I gave an overall theme that it would make me a more well rounded person and therefore a better doctor. I'm off to New Zealand in a few months to work for a while before I start next July.

I have a guaranteed spot in the 2005 class, and all I have to do is fill out the deferral part of the general application and the secondary again. It won't cost me anything and it's just some kind of official paperwork they have to do.
