So, i was searching mdapplicants, and i came across a few people who actually deferred from their accepted school and then re-took the mcat and then re-applied in the next round. if you defer, are you allowed to do this? i don't see how doing that is possible or even ethical.

Yes, it is possible, and yes it is ethical because the med school that you deferred at allows you to do so.

Even though you've been guarranteed a spot for the following year's class, they still filled that slot for that year, and could easily fill your slot for the next year. So nobody is losing out. Plus, they got your non-refundable deposit, so technically their ahead on the deal. There's nothing unethical about it.

It depends on the school. I've heard of Case and Columbia allowing people to do this, but most deferment forms I have seen stipulate that you may not apply to other schools during the deferment. You must also write up a reason why you are deferring and get permission to do so. I suppose that schools that let you defer and reapply don't really lose out since they will be able to fill the spot that they reserve for you once you get accepted elsewhere. Most applicants get upset when they hear about it since many find it difficult to get one acceptance and feel incredibly lucky to have just that.
