BlameItOnTheNurse

I was always wondering what u have to say in order for a particular school to let u defer...any ideas. I would not have a valid reason, but if i was accepted and wanted to chill for a year... what could i tell the school, that would not get me booted.
I wont tell anyone the secret on how to be deferred if u post...

I was just honest and told them what I would actually be doing for the coming year -- teaching, which I said would be good since good doctoring requires good teachihg skills, plus I wanted to make some money while having a break between the intense pre-med years and the intense med school years, and getting out of my parents' house where I've been living since graduating from college. It seemed to work.

The dean of admissions (or someone on the adcom...I can't remember exactly what her position was) at Harvard med came to talk to our school 2 years ago, and she encouraged us to defer for whatever reason. She went on to say that an applicant told her he wanted a year off to be a ski bum, and that she was happy to grant him that.

I would ask call the office of admissions anonymously and ask about their deferment policies and under what circumstances they grant a deferment...and how lenient they are about it. Also, see if you can find & speak to some of their current med students that have deferred in the past. Good luck!

Blame, why are you asking this question? 😕 Since you already started medical school, I think it is too late to defer, right? Of course, I might be wrong. Is medical school so bad already? 🙁 Catch you later. 🙂

He's probably thinking about deferring if he get's into UM...like trying out FSU for a year and having the UM deferred for security just in case he doesn't like FSU...am I right Blame?

UM doesn't allow deferrals.

Ladybug,
You are way to smart...you should be a doctor or something...
it was just a simple question...

Is that true? They can "boot" you for applying for a deferral? Wouldn't they just say 'NO'? 😕

I think I might try to defer, but not if they can kick me out just for asking.
I was thinking of just saying that I think I might be more succesful in med school if I spend a year fulfilling other ambitions so that I may focus more on med school during my time there.

I was just granted a deferral from UC Davis. I pretty much just said that I was getting married and was applying for jobs. I don't even have a job yet. Apparently they're not too picky about these things. I was all set to lie, and say I was pregnant or something, but now I'm glad I didn't bother.

Damn. I really want to defer my BU acceptance, but they don't allow deferrals. And I don't really want to lie to BU in order to get an exception.

Right, lying would be a bad idea. People who think they may want to defer should find out sooner rather than later whether the schools they're applying to consider deferral requests.
