A friend of mine got accepted into Iowa State but is now having doubts about having enough money to pay for tuition (and she's not brave enough to call and ask herself about this!), and she was wondering if any of you know whether it is possible to defer her spot for next year?? Thanks everyone! 🙂

How will deferring for a yr help her pay for tuition a year later? she can save 100k+ money by that time? No one has enough money to pay tuition, i doubt she will be allowed to defer based on this reason

I don't believe monetary concerns are enough for them to grant deferment. Is she worried about not getting enough financial aid? Because whatever her award is (loans, grants, whatever) should be more than enough to cover her expenses (tuition and living).

If she has any questions about her eligibility/aid award she should contact Clay in the office of financial aid, and if she wants a definitive answer on the deferment thing she should contact Kathy in the OASA (office of academic and student affairs) office.

Alright thanks! She said something about a possible inheritance or something, but there is only so much I can do without knowing more about her situation. I will tell her what you guys said!

I agree with what the others have said - usually not having the finances isn't a reason to defer as there are both government and private loans to cover tuition and living expenses. Most applicants to professional school won't come close to having the $100,000-plus cost to attend in their pocket, so loans are necessary.
