I just need some advice of what are the steps I need to do if I have an MD deferred/delayed matriculation from 2008-2009 application cycle, granted by taking a year off to a prestigious postbac program at the National Institute of Health. My main interest has always been MD-PhD, but my only red flag was my low MCAT scores; however I reapplied and got 1 out of state interview at the University of Illinois. My interview is a month away, if I were to be accepted into the MD-PhD program can I drop my deffered MD admission? I don't want to drop it until I am sure of the acceptance to med school or MD-PhD.

I really had a tough application year in 2008-2009, and this year with stronger letters, more research experience and almost perfect essay I was able to get an MD-PhD interview and was wondering what are your comments about my chances of acceptance.

Does any of the moderators know the AAMC deffered admission policies, what procedures are needed to drop one in case of reapplication and acceptance to another school (MD-PhD). The info is nowhere to be found on the website

Deferral policies are set by individual schools, not the AAMC. Some institutions will grant a deferral with the stipulation that you agree that you will not apply to other schools during the deferral year(s). Based on your original post, this would not appear to be the case with your deferral. It seems that all you need to do is to promptly withdraw from the MD program once you receive the MD-PhD offer.

I did a deferred admission. For me, I still had to "reapply" through AMCAS but just use the special deferred admission process. When you do this, the application only lets you pick one med school and I believe that when I logged in they knew which school it was supposed to be (I might be wrong about that, I can't remember.) The school has been in touch with me the entire time, letting me know deadlines, etc, for each step.

So I guess, for me, if I had changed my mind about accepting my deferrel, I could either have not logged on through AMCAS or not chosen the special deferrel path in the application? I do believe that there are special AMCAS traffic laws regarding deferred admissions, so you might have effectively "given up your spot" by applying to new schools this year, which is typically a violation of deferral agreements.

Did you get papers from your school? Also, the right thing to do is probably to give up your spot as soon as you know that you don't want it, in order to free up room for someone else who desperately wants it.

Of course, this is an Internet forum, so it might make the most sense to just call AMCAS. 🙂

Ellifino, actually what happened to me is that I logged into the AMCAS 2010 an the X school who granted me the deferred admission appeared in conjunction with a $0.00 balance and with the status "Deferred/Delayed Matriculation" when I went to Print view. However I was able to add new schools and pay for them, as in a normal application. To this day, the school still appears with the same status.

The school sent me a letter during the fall telling me that I had officially been granted a deferred admission, and that they would send the required papers at the end of the Spring semester 2009-2010. They have not contacted me since. This is good for me since it buys time until I get either acceptance or rejection of the MD-PhD program in March (since the interview is weeks away)

I will give up the spot once I get a positive outcome from UIC.
Thanks for your comments
