Deficiency in Basic Science Education in Australia

I have nothing against Asian people, just people are deluded if they think the quality of life and living standards are better in Asia than in the West, keep smoking whatever you are smoking. I have been to India which accounts for nearly half of Asia's population, there is a small wealthy elite but most people in India starve. A friend of mine visited China and even paid a guy to show him the slums of Shanghai, the super modern photos of Shanghai are BS. If that were really true, why do so many Asians go to the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia/NZ??

In Germany if you are caught with a gram of marijuana, they just take it away from you, no arrest, in Singapore, they kill you, why would I want to live in such a country? If you really want to expand Asia, lets include Israel, which is technically in Asia, very modern and high tech.

I do see America getting competition but not from Asia, it will be from Europe. Europe has modern technology and the capability to build a powerful military machine. Most of the global aviation industry is dominated by Europe and the USA with Russia having a smaller part of it.

I never brought China or India into my debate about transportation...only you did that. In fact I distinctly mentioned Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong. As for Singapore's strict laws, who cares? So what if you don't want to live there, that doesn't mean it's a bad place to live. In fact it's because of those strict laws that it has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. You don't seem to be judging these countries by any objective standards, but only your own subjective ones. It seems like you have a very distorted view of the world.

Yeah well Singapore and HK are really enclaves of Western influence of Asia. Even Japan is like that in many ways, Japanese love to travel to Europe and the US, few go to other Asian countries. Owning a BMW or a Mercedes is a sign of success for many Japanese. Most of Asia is third world, and if you really looked at it Asians are nowhere near as well off as Europeans and Americans. And has it occurred to you that Australia exists as it does because America is a Superpower? Before it depended upon Britain, and Britain abandoned Australia during World War 2. The United States has been a key military ally of Australia for decades, John Howard knew this and so does Kevin Rudd. A significant amount of the aircraft that the Australian military uses comes from the USA. In fact PM Rudd placed a giant order for American F-35 Fighter planes.

Keeping China and India out of Asia is like keeping Germany and France out of Europe, your argument becomes nonsense. Most of Asia's billions live in very poor conditions.

Japan is modern, so what?? Its only for the Japanese, its well known that they mistreat immigrants over there, especially Koreans and Chinese.

Your arguments are becoming nonsensical...you were initially talking about transportation, I brought up countries that had much better transportation networks then Europe, and then you claim that I wasn't taking all of Asia into account, again so what?

And what does Japan mistreating immigrants have to do with it's transportation network?

Interesting page about the potential threats to Australia's security:
http://www.rsimpson.id.au/books/tomorrow/explore/threats.html#3

Australian billionaire Rupert Murdoch is one of the most pro American voices in Australia, he's a lot smarter than the average Aussie I have to admit, and knows the US provides for Australia's security. Look up ANZUS just in case you do not know which world power defends Oz.

and are you aware that Rupert Murdoch relinquished his Aussie citizenship and is a naturalized US citizen?

Rupert Murdoch doesn't love or like any country. He kisses the asses of anyone in any country to make money.

He is originally English - born & bred. He moved to Australia when he was very young and now spends most of his time in the USA. He is of high aristocracy in England (his father was knighted by the Queen, went to Oxbridge, etc...) -- yet, his newspapers spends a lot of time outing the dirty laundry of the British Royal Family.

His Fox News Europe is as anti-American as his Fox News USA is pro-Republican - because he knows that this is what garners the most ratings and makes the most money in Europe. But then he does a complete 180 in the USA.

EDTA: Wikipedia says he was born in Australia but I swear I saw a picture of him in his fathers arms on a steam ship to Australia from England in either Time or Newsweek. He definitely went back to England for his education though. He graduated from Oxford.

It seems that you were discouraged very much by your experience in India. 🙂 I think Asia is not all bad... In terms of internet, transportation, and government efficiency, Singapore is better than Sydney, for example. Singapore's MRT and bus system are more comprehensive (perhaps because the city is so small...) than Sydney's, and in fact is comparable to London's tube and better than France's corail intercite or Paris Metro.

Indonesia is not as blessed as Singapore, and yes, many westerners find it 'horrid.' But you can live a comfortable life in jakarta (the capital), having big big houses and several cars, several housemaids to clean your house, drivers to drive your car, plus other 'luxuries', all at almost a quarter of the cost of living 'normal' life in Melbourne, for example. That kind of lifestyle is pretty common in Jakarta. In what other city in 'developed countries' can you do that?

Well, i think it all depends on what our lifestyle is, and what we like in life. There are always trade-offs. In jakarta, the streets are not safe, for example. No welfare system, etc. But you get cheap 'luxurious' life with low costs. 🙂

Most asians go to Aussie, NZ, UK, US, etc because they are english speaking countries. To go to other asian countries we have to learn languages that are considered 'minority languages'- like vietnamese, thais, malay, etc. It's a lot of extra effort, compared to learning english and aim for Aussie, NZ, UK, etc.

Adrianus - don't take Janikey seriously... nobody else does. Many of his posts are inconsistent. Also, it's hard to judge a MASSIVE country like India based on one short visit. A lot of people will spend a couple of weeks/months in a country, and suddenly think that they know just as much about that country as the people who were raised and educated there.

On the other hand, a lot of people don't know anything about their own country... they just have the distorted perspective of their own experiences. For example, most of my Pakistani relatives incorrectly believe that there are more Muslims in India than in Pakistan... in fact, that information is outdated by a couple of decades.

Anyway, a word to anybody who is just browing this forum (and doesn't post regularly):
Please don't pay attention to what Janikey writes. We all know that he's just looking for attention, and all he wants to do is spout baseless negativity with little regard to the fact that people make life-changing decisions based on what they read on these forums.
