This might be a very dumb question but I'm going to ask anyways haha..

I'm filling out secondaries such as Maryland's and UCI's and I'm trying to figure out what is considered "clinical experience" and what is considered "clinical activities".

I've worked in a free clinic before where I take vitals of patients so I'm 100% sure that this is considered "clinical experience".

What I'm not too sure about is shadowing. I've shadowed in various settings mostly in the OR with an anesthesiologist and have seen a wide variety of surgeries, but I don't get to touch or do anything. Does this count as clinical activity/clinical experience?

Shadowing is listed under the "Other" category on the AMCAS application, and is not a clinical experience in the way that most adcomms think of it, which would be interactions with patients. I would call it clinical exposure or clinical passivity (LOL) since you are not engaging the patient personally. Your free clinic time was clearly a clinical activity.

If you are close enough to the patients to smell and/or reach out and touch them, its probably clinical.:meanie:

If the only shadowing you do is their after-hours lifestyle...

What about nursing home volunteering? I can definitly smell the patients 🙂. I feel like this may be a grey area...

Absolutely not. Get in there and volunteer if you want. 👍
