So I've seen several people arguing about wether or not paid clinical hours is better/worse than volunteer hours. I understand that they both have their own place, but from an admissions standpoint, would you prefer someone with 1000 hours of paid clinical work (ie: EMT) or 1000 hours of volunteer work?

I think it is difficult for disadvantaged people to find the time apart from work to volunteer some. However difficult doesn't mean impossible.

I've been told that it is better to have paid clinical work because people who have paid clinical work tend to do a lot more than the volunteers. It's good to have non medical community service too though

The goal is to get understanding of what a doctor's life entails. How you accomplish that: paid vs volunteer is up to you. I worked in the hospital and never did volunteer work, didn't need it, didn't have time. I was never asked why I didn't do volunteer work.

They're both fine. When I see an app from, say, an EMT with five years experience, I'll never ding him/her for lacking volunteer work.

I've been told a few times that paid experience is usually held a little higher as one typically has more responsibilities and duties to fulfill. With that said I'm sure it varies from person to person. I've been employed in the medical field for 3 years and it's been an absolute godsend. My significant other has been searching for a few years and has come up with nothing, so it's really hard to ding someone on that.
