Sometimes its something simple........

What are the signs, symptoms or labs for dehydration?
{I dont want to always depend on a lab for this....

[moral of story. Its not always the most complicated disease or disease to the nth degree]
[also I dont want to go thru every Osler diagnosis just to have some one say he is dehydrated]

Ill start: dry tongue

tachycardia
dry, coarse skin
high reperfusion time
orthostatic hypotension
BUN/Cr is often high (high renin + high ADH means RBF and GFR are low and urea reabsorption is high)

What is the context? Traumatic dehydration like hemorrhagic shock or just working outside in the heat?

#1 sign is thirst
#2 is pee that is like yellow motor oil
#3 is death

 

[Occams Razor]

Poor skin turgor is another sign in non-geriatric patients

Nothing fancy or magic here, but Ill be more specific.. Im talking of mild , moderate and severe dehydration.. Thank you..

In moderate to severe dehydration you could see confusion, convulsions, dizziness (in general altered mental status)

[by the way its in the top 10 causes of hospital stays in Medicare patients, by the way most will use Medicare!]

There was a study that showed that increased ADH/Vasopressin levels facilitates memory consolidation. So, it might be a good thing that you're dehydrated before exams.

Yes, I could believe that, not even thinking of going to the urinate and "just the right fluid balance"...

Ill just add: mild dehydration is up to 5% loss of fulids, moderate is up to 10% loss of fluids and severe is above 15% of fluids.. Major problems like altered mental status may occur above 10%, also the symptoms of couirse are increased in the elderly..

skin turgor which has to do with elasticity of the skin. turgor is poor if the skin remains tented longer then usual.. skin turor should ideally be tested on the sternum or the forehead as Occams is suggesting especially in the elderly..
