We need more context. If you've been studying for 3 weeks, then you're not giving yourself a chance. But if you've been studying for 7 weeks, then you may just be where you're going to score.
I don't see how anybody would think you took a leave of absence and not just a research year if you did research afterward. If you can afford the year, and you actually expect to improve your step 1 score then it's an option.
