It depends on your other stats and the school you are applying to. The decision is very multifactorial. It comes down to numbers (grades, MCAT), letters of recommendation, medical experience, community service, etc. Some programs weigh more heavily on numbers and others rely more heavily on having a good, well-rounded person with community service/volunteering. I know this probably only confuses things more, but the most important thing is to research the schools you are most interested in and talk to people from there to determine what they look at the most
 
It serves the purpose of helping people that can't afford a place to live.

You might want to frame your opening questions better, for future reference.
