Don’t be upset. He likely has no idea what is and isn’t important to state in the letter, or may have just forgotten. But you are right… It is helpful to state how long you’ve known the applicant so people reading the letter can judge how much weight your statement carries. So own it. Ask him, and provide the sentence yourself to make it easier. Something like “to help adcoms judge the importance of your letter in the application, can we add this sentence to the first paragraph? ‘I have known luggagebag0909 for ___ years and I am very confident in my appraisal of him/her.’”
 
Thank you for the reply! Unfortunately I am already complete at a couple of schools...Would it be weird to update the letter and have a sentence changed? I think he would be happy to change it given our close relationship, but I don't want schools to think I saw the letter or something...:sorry:

Not sure. Maybe some of the Adcoms can answer. I wouldn’t see an issue with changing it. Or maybe you can change it for other schools where you’re not complete.
