Where is your state of residence ? You could do a DIY post bacc at a local college in the coming year to increase your sGPA.
Which schools did you apply to this cycle ?
Need the year by year GPAs, but on the surface, rising GPA trends are always good, and it seems like you don't need an SMP or post-bac.Hello, everyone.
As SMPs and post-bacc apps start to open up, I'm debating on whether I should apply/which one I would potentially choose.
A little background about me - I recently graduated college in 3 years and I have a 3.5 cGPA (3.4 sGPA) and a very STRONG upward trend within those 3 years.
I've been involved in many activities and continue doing so during my gap year and I know that extracurricular wise, I'm not lacking in anything so that's all set.
My main concern is my GPA. I am an ORM, I did go to a relatively difficult school but that's no excuse for poor studying skills which I did not learn till my second year. Unfortunately I got 5 C's in the process in introductory level classes (i.e. gen and o chem), however I got all A's in every upper level class so I know that doesn't entirely make up for my lack of success. Unfortunately, there's a really good reason why I did terribly during the winter semester though I cannot disclose that at all on a public forum.
I plan on applying to SMPs and post-baccs because of my terrible grades in chem. Not sure if my MCAT score (520) will make up for it however, this is a legitimate concern of mine so...
I know my GPA does not need as much repair compared to those individuals who do end up opting for a post-bacc, but at the same time I know SMPs are a high risk high reward so there's another concern too.
I've read countless posts about post-baccs and SMPs already but I'm still confused. I will be applying to both however I'm not sure what I should be leaning towards.
Any comments would be helpful and if you want to know more about my background, just ask me and I can elaborate!
It's a hard call with only one datapoint (one solid year) of great grades. I recommend applying to both MD and DO, and some SMPs as insurance. In the mean time, take some DOY postbac courses in upper level biology.@Goro
1st year ~ 3.1
2nd year ~ 3.4
3rd year ~ 3.9
(Finished degree in 3 years)
@Faha I did not apply this cycle, though I made a comprehensive school list with only MD schools. My residence is in Ohio.
@keanureaves I did not add HBCUs to my list only because I'm ORM (Asian).. thought you would be more likely to accepted if you were URM/Black there?
@ppushpak Public university but I believe T10 for public colleges. Overall probably T30-40?
