If you can talk to any M3s or M4s that would be a great place to start. They can direct you to surgical faculty who may be open to working with M1s on research (and who would provide a better research experience). Then I would just send those people an email and go from there.

I got my research by going to the webpage of the local residency and emailing all the residents on there. I told them who I was, what specialties I was interested in, my qualification, and attached my CV. I have been sending out emails periodically since December. I was finally able to get in contact with an ortho resident at a casting clinic we had at my school. I talked to him there and now I am helping him out on his project. I would just email as many people as possible, attach a CV and tell them how you are capable of helping them out. I didn't really do any bench research in undergrad but did some data entry and literature searches for my senior thesis. So I told them I knew how to search, knew how to do a write up and it was no problem. I was lucky to find a project that a retrospective study of patients instead of having to work in a lab.
