Hey guys,

I have a huge delimma..I applied with very poor MCAt score (24) and a good GPA 3.8 MCBP and 3.62 Overall....however, i have been rejected from 4 american schools, and tons of EC and good research, offered and interview at 1 Bufallo on 2/18, and have been accepted to ROSS university in the carribean...MY delimma is if I can get accepted to a US school...should i go ahead and go to ROSS or should I retake my mcats in 2005, (Can't take in 2004, because of family obligation), and try to apply for class of 2010 and in the mean time try research...or do u think that is a waste of time...Please give me some feed back...and if anyone knows what my chances are for the buffalo interview...

I have not heard from
STony Brooks
MOUnt SINAI
NYMC

Thanx alot😕

I think you need to apply to more schools the next time around. There is no reason someone with a 3.8 should have to go to the carribbean.

AND try to cut down spelling errors in your application materials. Did you get a VERY low verbal score? A 4-10-10 is not the same as an 8-8-8...

The only thing keeping you from a US medical school is your MCAT. I would take it again this April. I don't know what your family obligation is...but if you can get away from your family obligation to attend a Caribbean medical school...why not to take a year off and really study hard for the MCAT? Take a prep course, pimp your MCATs, then apply as early as possible. With a 30+ MCAT score, you will be at a great school! Gluck!

MCAT is not everything, you are a whole package. It is all about presentation. Your GPA kills mine and your MCAT is like mine, and I have an Interview coming. It all depends on how you present your self. Strong Letters of rec coudn't hurt either. It is not all about the numbers at most schools. If you would have applied to Case I bet you would have got an interview there because if you read their mission numbers aren't everything. Just tell them despite of your MCAT what has your research and volunteer experience contributed to you.

If you don't want to go caribeean, try the Finch Applied physiology program........it is a one year masters program with a 90% of admissions to next years incoming class. I hope this helps.

There are some programs that offer an 5 year MS/MD (MS is in exercise science). My roomate had an identical MCAT, as well as similar research etc. He did not get directly admitted to any 4 year MD programs but he was accepted to a 5 year Md program that same year. I know Medical College of Ohio and Finch have programs like this. I think it is a great way to get an MD if you are willing to put in the extra year and enjoy exercise science.

The negatives of going overseas is that you are not guaranteed a residency match. Schools brag about their success but if it really was all that succesful why don't you see much more FMG. My mentor who I do clinical research with was on the internal medicine committee and he told me that they caught hell for taking 1 FMG even though they felt he was qualified. The medical beuracracy is stupid but it is up to us once we get in to change it.

Did you only apply to four US schools?

No i applied to 8 US schools and got rejected by 4 already...still waiting on the other four...MCATs were 7V, 7P, 10B.

even if you have a family obligation you could try again with the same stats because they should be enough. I agree with verbalassasin its all about presentation. Maybe have someone who is really good at writing help you out with your essay which could get you an interview because you really should be able to get in somewhere. The out of country school thing is fine but I heard that tuition is very expensive and like it or not there is a stigma attached. Of course i am gonna be a DO and there is a bit of a stigma attached to that too, its all about what YOU want to do. Maybe explore the DO route i know you would be more than competetive numbers wise, but don't do it just to get in somewhere make sure that it is what you want to do.

I was interviewed at Buffalo with a 27. Both of my interviewers asked about it, but said that I wouldn't be at the interview if I couldn't make it as a doc, so the same goes for anyone else with a "less than great MCAT" that lands an interview there. I would suggest explaining why you had those scores without saying you're bad test taker. It sounds like you have everything else together. I was waitlisted early on, but my position is in the top 1/3 of the list, so there is hope! Last year they went to the middle of the bottom 1/3, so if you can either get in outright (obviously), or get in at least the middle 1/3 you should be ok. Relax during your interview, and really give the interviewers a chance to get to know who you are besides a 3.8, 24 MCAT. Take control over what you want to tell them. When they ask you a question, answer it, but then try to relate it to something else that you're more comfortable with. I wish you the best of luck!

Thanx for the advice....wish me luck at the interview and i'll try to let u know how it goes.

Did you interviewat any of the schools before they rejected you?

I PM'ed you

Yeah, I def. think it's the MCAT that's holding you back. We all like to think that med schools look for a whole package, but the reality is that these numbers are TREMENDOUSLY important (with MCAT prob the most important). Raise that score and I guarantee you'll have better luck next time.

You should def. try to wiggle out of that family obligation? I can't imagine ANYTHING that would keep me out of school for a year.
