Has anybody had major problems with their Dell laptops? I've been reading some reviews that said the motherboard dies due to the laptop overheating. Other people seem to have no problems. I'm getting it for school...not for watching DVD's and gaming.

FYI...CVS employees can take advantage of the Dell Employee Purchase Program! 🙂

Thanks!! 😀

Bought 5 Dell Laptops past 2 years for personal and business use. They are all solid and not a single problem.

You can have this problem with any laptop computer...regardless of the make. Some have better casing/exhaust than others though. I have a Dell laptop and love it. Don't go for a high-end graphics chip if you don't think you'll need it...that can help control the heat 😉

What exactly is the Dell Employee Purchase Program and how much of a discount would I get? Who would I speak to about this program at my CVS (PIC or Store Manager)?

I've had 2 Dell laptops, property of my work, in the last 2 years, and they've been great - no problems. I've also had an IBM X41 Tablet PC, and I like that one too.

Just backup your data regularly, and get the extended warranty plan.

I just got a card in the mail last week that had some discounts that CVS employees can take advantage of. On the card, it says you can contact your store manager, or the Contact Support Center (1-866-528-7272). The discount from Dell depends on what computer and what service plan you get...but it can be up to 12%, plus they send special coupons every week that save even more.
Other discounts included GM new vehicle purchase and discounts on GE appliances.

Thanks to everyone for the imput!

Not to promote one website over another, but if you're in the market for a Dell, check out http://www.stealdeals.net/ Dell always seems to have some type of special or good deal on laptops. One just ended for an E1505 Inspiron, but it seems like there's a new one up each week.

My very first laptop was made by Compaq, and I couldn't stand that laptop. I ALWAYS had problems with it, and a lot of times it would just restart on its own. Then I got a Dell, and I have stuck with Dell ever since. I had a total of 3 Dell laptops, and I never had a problem with any of them. The reason I replaced them was to upgrade, I usually upgrade my laptops every 2 years. I currently have a Dell 600m and I love it. No problems at all.

I would seriously suggest not considering Dell. I have had my laptop for barely two years and the LCD screen stopped working. I spent $1500 on the computer and had to spend another $300 to get the LCD screen fixed (Dell wanted to charge me $500, but I was able to get them to reduce the price). I have been without my computer for two weeks and finally got it back today only to find out that it still is not working. The box that Dell shipped it back to me in looks like it was retrieved from a dumpster. DHL came to pick up the computer again and it is on its way back to Dell's repair center.

I have spent the last month dealing with this issue between trying to work out a deal with Dell that I could afford and finding out what is going on with my computer. Their customer support is completely inept and apathetic to customer problems. I even had to file a complaint about one particular rep that was very rude and inappropriate to me. Everything with Dell seems so esoteric and no one takes accountability for anything, they simply transfer the call. I will certainly go with an Apple computer before I start medical school.

I've bought 3 Dell laptops in the past year & half (for me & my boyfriend). The Inspiron 600m, E1405, & E1505. They were mostly used for school purposes & we also used the E series for gaming (World of Warcraft).

The only real problem that we had was the 600m overheating bc the fan broke, however Dell fixed it for us under warranty. Unfortunately, that fan broke yet again, only the 2nd time the warranty had expired.

The new laptops have been great except for the minor light leakage at the bottom of the screen (I hear this is very common with Dell's Truelife screens) & the annoying bloat-ware that Dell installs & slows down the system. We just wiped the drive & reinstalled Windows. It was a hassle, but my laptop runs fast as hell now. And since the E1505 has a graphics card in it, the right side of the laptop (where the graphics card is located) gets hotter than usual. Not to where it's a problem, but something to be aware of.

But all in all, I think Dell give you a bang for your buck, especially if you're a student & need a laptop for school purposes. I'm a big fan of Dell... I also have an Axim x51v from them that has been working out just fine too.

Oh yeah, if you are still in the refundable time-frame after buying your laptop, you can call Dell, tell them that you're not satisfied & want to return your laptop & they will probably offer to give you some money back to keep the laptop (it costs them more to take it back than to pay you $100 to keep it). There are forums out there on how to do this. Then maybe you'll find that your system is worth the few minor cons with your system.
