What are the prospects for new dentists looking for a job?

How does it compare to other medical options like optometry and MDs?

Just curious.
Short version: They're good.

Slightly longer version: Dentists are retiring twice as fast as they're graduating.

Longest version: Do a search.

MDs are more readily employable. There are medical/HMO groups that offer a pre-set salary, benefits, and malpractice insurance based on a contractual basis. Often, they solicit to MDs during their residencies.

Dentistry jobs are typically found through personal connections, which may make or break you.

There are plenty of these types of jobs available in dentistry too. If you want to work for an HMO, I wouldn't worry, you can do it as a dentist too.
In my job search, I have came across lots of jobs ready to hire me tomorrow and work me like a slave.

The prospects are fairly strong in my opinion. Just this morning, CNN ran a story detailing that Americans spent 336 million dollars on teeth whitening alone last year. Granted, a significant portion of that figure was due to over-the-counter products, I would still say the prospects for cosmetics alone are good. No career is a 100% stable, but given the recent situation with General Motors losing a billion dollars last year and subsequently eliminating 25,000 jobs, the stability of dentistry is among the top when put in context of the entire country. Finding employment will probably be the least of your worries. Take care and GOD bless.

The nice thing about dentistry is that your success in the field is entirely up to you. Unlike making 200K as a manager at GM or Enron or KMart dentistry won't have you waiting to hear if you are going to get canned every week. Sure, your are going to have to worry about getting butts in the chairs but that isn't dependent on other peoples decisions, it is based on your direct influence on your business. It is like team sports versus individual sports. Playing on a team you are always worried about everyone else doing their jobs, when you are out by yourself you just have to worry about doing your job. But then again if you are the type of person who just tags along on other peoples accomplishments, you might be better working for a dental mill.

I totally agree with this, which is one of the most attractive aspects of dentistry. It can be exhilirating to have control over your professional fate. If you fail, you fail and have to look no further than the mirror to see whose's to blame. Time and time again, I had to endure counterproductive measures in the workplace due to the complacency of others who never actually had to do the work.

The analogy about sports is dead on, which is why it always amazes me when fans get so wrapped up that they jump on the field or throw beer. Sure, I pull for the home team, but that is as far as it goes. Take care and GOD bless.
