I am a pre dent and already accepted into NYU for FAll 2007. I am going on an interview for a dental assistant job I found in my local newspaper. It sais experienced NOT required. Considering I have no experience expect 50 hours shadowing, what can I ask for an hourly wage?

It depends on where you live. With no experience, you will probably get paid what the guy working the drive through window at McDonalds gets paid. Assistants don't make very much at all and that is part of the reason why there are always 5000 assistant jobs listed in the paper. Very high turnover in this job.

It definitely depends on where you live. I have seen assistants paid everywhere from 8$ to 18$ an hour. It also depends on how profitable the dental office is and how generous your employer is. You could probably get $13 since you have a college education. . .

I got $11/hr as an ortho asst...I don't know if that's good, but just to give you an idea 🙂

I get $9 for full scope OMFS office. But my coworkers get alot more than me.

I'm an "intern" and I would be working there for free if I had too.

I really like it. The experience you will get is far more important than the pay...but shoot for at least $9 though, that isn't much after taxes!!

The schools prefer you to work at an office, ha ha ha, not just shadow.

I got paid 7$/hr. In NM.

^^ You usually don't set the hourly wage. The manager of the dental office (not the dentist him or herself!) sets your hourly wage.

And in my experience being a dental assistant, I only got paid $9.50 an hour.

Very ****TY hourly wage. You also work like a slave and it's a very exhausting job. Plus I had to work with jerk dental assistants who thought that they were the dentist's angel while they treated me like the bottom man.

I'm going to continue my dental assistant job at another office starting next week. But I'm only going to work there for three months. Then I'm done. 😀

I get $13/hr in Michigan with no prior experience. I asked for $10 but got more maybe b/c I work for a corporation

I made $10/hour to start when I had no experience as a DA and no training and got a raise within 4 months to 12.50. As an ortho assistant I made $15 to start

wow thats pathetic i always thought assistants had to goto school and now i see that they only earn 10 bucks, that sad, they do all the crappy work for the dentists.

I started at 8.50 with no training, was raised to 11 within six months for part time work. I have more experience and skills now and make >18, but that is in downtown SF where the minimum wage is 8.50 and people generally get paid more.

i just dont get it...how can you be a DA without going to school to be trained for it???..then whats the point of going into a DA program....and how do you guys who are DA assistants w/o previous training apply for a job like that?! Shoot I would love to apply for a DA job but I would feel insecure writing on my resume that I have no previous experience...

i think it differs state by state..... usually you can get a DA job w/ no previous experience.... it's called on the job training (go figure, lol). there are, however, classes you can take a CCs that will make you certified and generally you will be paid accordingly.

someone correct me if i'm wrong.
jb!🙂

What are some of the tasks of a dental assistant?

What are some of the tasks of a dental assistant?

In California it is legal to assist without a degree. I got an Xray license and a coronal polishing certificate thru classes paid for by the dentist I worked for within 6 months of starting. I don't know how it works in other states.

I got a job working front office,(in CA) with no experience in the dental field but a Bachelors making ten dollars an hour. I did get my x-ray license and am finally being trained for back office. (also taking a dental assistant online course) However, I am thinking of asking for a raise since I have been there for seven months. Any suggestions?
