Hey,

how did all of you get experience? Shadowing? Assisting? For how long? What if you're working full-time?!?!? Any suggestions appreciated!

just go to a dentist you know and ask of you can shadow. if you don't know anyone, check out offices near by. also some offices are open during saturday so you can do that while working. start off at a general dentist to get an idea since most of your work in dental school will be general stuff. then you can branch out to see other specialties.

also, you can visit a dental school near you and see if they have volunteer opportunities in their dental clinic.

good luck

I have been an assistant for the past 6 years. Most dentist love to have someone shadowing them. Just pick one out of the phone book. Also, try to pick one that performs a variety of procedures.

If you have a predental club at your school or ASDA group, try and ask them. ASDA here at UF hooked me up with two really interesting and great dentists, one a specialist, and I shadowed them for about a year. Also, try your own undergrad dental school if you have one. Good luck!

I shadowed two general dentists for a week each. One of them was my actual dentist and the other was another local dentist. I want to go into general dentistry, so that's why I shadowed two. I think it was really helpful, because you can compare styles and approaches of each and see what direction you might want to take your practice in the future.

Try finding hospitals and other health organizations that provide dental outreach programs to the public or special populations. They are always in need of volunteers.
