Hey guys, I'm a premed and I usually post in pre-allo but recently I've been thinking about dentistry and I wanted to ask a few questions.

I've been doing generic pre-med extracurriculars: volunteering at a hospital (not dental related) and undergrad research and things like that. If I was to go dent, would these be worth anything? I don't know any pre-dents that volunteer, though there are probably a few that do research in undergrad.

So after accumulating countless hours in these activities, would they be used in admissions at all? I've been looking around and it seems that dental schools don't put as much of an emphasis on extracurriculars as med schools do.

Also, how is the DAT different from the MCAT? Only big difference I see is that physical sciences is replaced by math in the DAT.

Thanks 😀

Yes all those things would be very beneficial... every predent, worth their salt, has to have good EC's to get into dental school.

Research, volunteering (anywhere), shadowing dentists, sports, work, clubs, hobbies, whatever... all this will go in your dental school app!!

Cheers!!!! 😀😀😀

You should volunteer at a free dental clinic or shadow a general dentist to see if you like the world of dentistry. Although Physics is a pre-req for dental school, it is not tested on the DAT.

Main DAT VS MCAT diff are no physics, but has the PAT (tests visual spacial abilities). Not to difficult, something you can teach yourself from a text. Also, when studying, DAT sciences seem to be a lot more general then MCAT questions I looked at. Good Luck!👍

Biggest difference I would say is that the MCAT has more passage based questions, whereas the DAT is just multiple choice on a fact or concept. Also so there is no writing on the DAT.
