Hey everyone!!
I am trying to figure out the best route to become a competitive dental school applicant.

I will have completed my associates in dental hygiene by June 2020, and i would like to take the most strategic but quickest route.

There’s a program at Texas Women’s university that offers a bachelors in dental hygiene (I can take it online and it can take 1-2 years to finish, but I’m not sure if dental schools will accept that i finished it online).

I could also get my bachelors in hygiene while taking the extra prerequisites needed for dental. Or I could just solely focus on the dental pre-reqs (2 years). Should i just go for another bachelors degree? (I was thinking BS in Healthcare studies at UTD)

I’d really appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you so much!

I am not sure if anyone else told you this but going for a Dental Hygienist degree just to become a more " competitive " applicant isn't worth it. It would honestly have the same benefit as being a scribe, EMT, or other basic health professional jobs. If you want to really be more academically competitive I would do a masters program offered by universities that have Dental schools ( ex: Rutgers, BU, NYU, etc ).

For example, one of my friends went for a Hygienist degree in NYU with a 3.6, currently half way done with his Masters with around a 3.5, and 20 AA. He applied to multiple schools, including NYU, but got only 1 interview/waitlist at UNE. He said he personally met with the Vice Dean of NYU ( he knows her personally when he was doing his Hygienist program ) to see what happened to his application, and she simply said to apply again after he finishes with his Masters.

Tl;dr = Not worth to do the program if your sole purpose is to be more competitive as an applicant.
