Currently working as a dental assistant until starting school in August. I’m wanting to prepare myself as best I can before dental school, so I’m wondering what things are most beneficial to know before starting, aside from the bookwork (also aside from like procedural equipment, reading/taking x-rays, basic tooth anatomy)?

Just enjoy your time off before school starts.

Working as a dental assistant will be more than enough. Enjoy your time off and start school strong!

I am also an assistant and starting school this summer. I’m currently casually reading dental and head anatomy. Since we have the luxury of studying on patient’s mouth everyday and asking quick questions to your dentist, it doesn’t hurt to have that applied knowledge now and will help for the repetition later. If you want to go a little more extreme, you can stream Goljan’s USMLE step 1 review to brush up or pick up a few things on basic science during your commutes.

Edit: Also, don’t be scared to try new things. Volunteer to take the alignate impressions even if it might take you three tries per full arch then pour it up yourself afterwards. Always insist on doing the temporary crowns or the coronal polishing to practice indirect vision on the lingual of the maxillary teeth. Be mindful of your posture. It’s better to screw up on your dentist’s own dime and still get paid for it. Good luck
