A friend and I came up on this topic today, and neither of us knew the answer, so I thought I'd ask you guys...

who is it that sets and approves SOP's (standard operating procedure) for dental procedures?

Is it ADA?

I don't think there is such a thing in dentistry. That sounds like some sort of government/military terminology.

Now if you're talking about "standard of care", this is a legal term used to define (in a given community) what treatment/decisions most other practitioners would give in a similar situation.

Okay so SOP's I suppose are not what I'm looking for.

But there must be some regulatory body that provides the guidelines for dental techniques and procedures. Consider the use of amalgam... i'm sure that certain alloys may be toxic, and someone somewhere must know this and provide regulations against the use of such toxic amalgams, right?

so... who is the mystery party?

FDA for some drugs/materials, the ADA's Council on Dental Materials for other materials.

As far as actual procedures and techniques, there are dozens of ways to get the same results, and you just use your judgement.
