Is it a bad idea to mention desire to pursue dental research (in addition to being a clinician) in PS if I'm applying to both research heavy and non-research-heavy schools?

I would think unless you have prior experience in research a "desire" to pursue in dental school may come off as baseless. If you want to mention it as part of your vision or future towards the end you can. Just make sure it fits in and isn't just randomly added in, make sure it ties in with the rest of the PS.

Remember, you're a clinician first, scientist second. I applaud your interest in research. Oftentimes, there is space in the secondary asking if you're interested in research for these "research-heavy" schools. For example, UCSF straight up asks you if you're interested in their PhD program in their secondaries. With regards to your personal statement, a focus on patient care is critical. However, one of UCSF's past deans, Dr. Charles Bertolami, expounds on the need for a "taste for complexity", "a mind for science", or "a consumer of science" among dental students in one of his articles. It would be a good idea to provide evidence of similar values or perspectives on the role of curiosity in your undergraduate career.

I don't think it's a problem to mention it, as long as it isn't the primary focus of the personal statement. Some interest and exposure to the clinical side of dentistry will be expected as well.
