hey guys, do u think dental researchs are esstensial ? how many and what kind of extra-activities do i need to do? it's much easier do some extra-activities than research, how impoartant is research in the dental application? how you guys find dental research? i am at stony brook, does anyboday at stony brook need some assistant for some relative research? i called the stony brook dental school and they sayid they don't have any position for undergraduate.also i tried to ask any sciene advisor but it's difficult to find one . some people say that many people who get into dental school wiht high gpa and low DAT, but is there any people who get into dental shcool with low gpa and high dat? i hear that if a person get low gpa, but he got a high dat like 90%, it's diffcult for the dental committe skip his application, is it true?.

Many students do research before going to dental school, but the research doesn't have to be dental related. It'd probably help to show your interest in the field, but most schools just like to see that you took the time to do any sort of research. I suggest you look for research opportunities related to your major (i.e. biology or chemistry related research). Many professors take undergraduate students each semester for research. Some will ask you, other times you have to approach them first. At my school, professors like to see you have done well in their classes before they're willing to let a student do research. Most schools seem to stress your DAT score more than your GPA. If you have a 3.3+ GPA and have good DAT scores, you have a good chance at most schools. If you have a 4.0 gpa but get only a 16-17 DAT, it ends up making your GPA look less meaningful, but if an applicant has a 3.0 gpa with 20+ scores, then they'd most likely be accepted.

I think it's best to be balanced. It looks strange if an applicant w/ a 4.0 can't pull anything higher than a 16...says something about the school he/she went to or about his/her test taking skills (which is important b/c you DO have to pass the dental boards). Also, it's not a good idea to go in w/ a low GPA and then pull amazing DAT scores. Well, yes anyone w/ amazing DAT scores has increased their chances of being accepted...but the low GPA compared to the DAT scores says a lot about the person...either he/she is just lazy w/ schoolwork which could be a sign of how he/she will handle dental schoolwork. Or, of course the popular excuse: "My school was extremely hardcore...etc,etc" (which I personally believe is a lame excuse, b/c dental school will make any undergraduate degree earned at any undergraduate institution seem like a cake walk...)
