Hey guys just hoping I can get some advice from you guys about my schools choices.

So a little about me. . A year ago from this exact date, I was preparing for pharmacy school; I was working on my apps and throughout the year went to several schools like UCSD, UOP, USC for interviews. Truth be told, I was going into pharmacy because I figured it was a financially stable job and I enjoyed learning about drug mechanism. But I really didn't have a passion for this particular field; I figured I already committed all these years and resources to pharmacy I had to finish it out. But as the year went by and I went to more interviews, there was a common question that really made me rethink about my career choice. "Why pharmacy?" Why did I want to do pharmacy? As simple as it seems, when asked why by my interviewers I never had a clear-cut reason. I would have some "generic" reasons for why I wanted to pursue pharmacy, but something in my heart/gut was telling that a career change was needed. Enter dentistry. In the midst of contemplating pharmacy, I decided one day to randomly tagged along with my sister (who was in dire need of a root canal procedure) to our family dentist. The way my dentist performed this procedure was so meticulous and detailed it was kind of like a work of art. Not only was the procedure done quickly and precisely, my dentist also cracked a lot of jokes with my sister and I (which I thought was awesome). I thoroughly enjoyed watching him work and the way he joked with his patients made me really consider this field as a career choice. I love to joke around, I love working with my hands and I love the field of health. As soon as I saw the connection with me and dentistry, I asked my dentist if I could shadow him. Skipping ahead to current times, after shadowing and researching more about this career I am fully committed to dentistry and believe I have found my calling. I declined my various pharmacy school offers and now am preparing to apply dental school this summer!

In terms of my stats, I am a CA resident; I graduated with a biochem degree with a cGPA 3.88 and sGPA 3.9+. I have over 1000 plus hours of research for two different labs and worked as a calculus tutor for my university throughout college. I was also the treasurer of my prepharm club. In terms of shadowing and volunteering, I volunteered at a local elementary school as a tutor for roughly 300+ hrs. For shadowing, I've shadowed 3 different dentists for roughly 70 hours (hope to get this up).

My dat scores were: 22 AA, 21 TS, 25 PAT, 20 RC, 24 GC, 23 OC, 19 Bio
The schools I am looking to apply to are:

UCSF, UCLA, UOP, USC, Western, Uni. of Colorado, Oregon H&S uni., UPenn, and NYU.

What do you guys think about these school choices? Do you guys have any recommendations on other schools? I am relatively new to dentistry so am looking for a school where I can explore all aspects of dentistry to hopefully find my true calling. Thanks for all your help guys!

Sounds like you made the right choice to change from pharmacy, and declined before you spent much time and money going in that direction.

If you like working with people, and are good with your hands, you will enjoy dentistry more than pharmacy, IMO.

Excellent GPA with a difficult major, BTW. Is your degree from a UC school?

I would place UOP on top of your list. While tuition is outrageously expensive, it is a beautiful area to live in and it is the ONLY 3-year dental school in the country, which equates to one less year of tuition, and one more year of dentist income. Having worked with several grads from there, I have found them all to be very well clinically trained dentists.

Good luck!

Definitely would say get up to 100-150 hours of shadowing and you'll be good to go. Everything stats-wise is plenty enough to get interviews. Good school list, and being a CA resident is perfect especially for UCLA and UCSF. Why not add Columbia, Case Western, maybe even Baylor to the list? I don't see you having any trouble getting interviews there, just make sure you submit your application at the latest by June 26th. This is the last Friday in June and any application completed from June 2 to June 26 is all first batch. Get some good LoRs and write a meaningful PS mentioning your reasons for switching from pharmacy to dental and you'll have no problems I'd say. Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice! I did not attend a UC, attended a state school. I see the advantage of UOP only being a 3 years school, but I'm not sure if that would be an advantage for me. I'm still exploring the field of dentistry and may need some extra time to figure out what I truly want. Whether its general practice, specializing, academia, or research

Thanks for the advice Rams. I'll definitely look into those schools! BTW if you're user is talking about the St. Louis rams then I'm right there with you buddy! Rams fan since 1999.

I really want to apply to washington but they are not very oos friendly. What do you guys think

Stats look awesome, that takes a lot of courage to make such a big switch like you did. But I do not think in any way shape or form you will regret your decison to go into dentistry as a career choice (there are so so many opportunities). You will certainly get many interviews, like everyone else said, add some of those schools in and make your PS count, and get some awesome LOR's!!!

Good luck!

I agree add Columbia, case and Baylor

Haha sorry to disappoint it's VCU Rams! But I have family in St. Louis so go Rams!

You can add UNLV too, they have a pretty good clinical program and are pretty OOS friendly for a public school.

I would, but UNLV is crazy expensive. Also, vegas... LOL

I'm really on the fence about applying to Baylor because they only have around ~10 spots for OOS residents. Among those 10 spots, 6 spots were from neighboring states. 2 from Arkansas and 4 from Louisiana. Given this, I'm still going to apply because that tuition is just ridiculous.

Hi I'm new here and I need help, I'm studying Dentistry abroad which has a 6 year curriculum-- I'm done with the first two years, which has all the pre-dental school requirements (I'm not sure if they would mean anything in the US.)

I'm not so sure if I want to become a dentist, I have my immigrant visa already and I'm thinking of doing dental hygiene there in the US.

Just in case I decide to be a dentist, what would be the best path to take? Finish dentistry here then apply for international/advanced standing program there, or take up a bachelor's in dental hygiene?

Thank you and sorry, I'm still confused with the threads.

You should make your own thread. If you keep posting in old threads you're likely not going to get the answer you're looking for.
