Hey all!

Does anyone know of the cutoffs for some dental schools off the top of their heads?? I know some schools have a minimum of 18 across the boards and some 17. Do you know of any??

I got a 17 in RC 😕, but a 23 AA, a 25 TS, and a 22 PAT. I've been sulking all today thinking about the possibility of me not getting into a school because of my RC score. I understand that RC is becoming more and more important so I was wondering what your take on this is. I don't want to retake the DAT because of my TS score--the risk of me doing worse is pretty high (29 GC, 28 OC, 22 BIO).

I have approximately a 3.6 oGPA and a bit over 3.4 sGPA with A LOT of EC and leadership (a hefty amount of it). My grades went skyrocketed after my freshman year (I was going through some personal changes and messed up biology... I nearly flunked, thank god I didn't. Took a lot for me to bring up my sGPA from the pits]

The reason why I ask for your opinion is because I want to aim for schools such as Columbia, NYU, UPenn, UCLA, POSSIBLY even Harvard (definitely won't get in with a 17????). Those are my top choices.

It would be amazing if you could lend a fellow pre-dental student a hand. I'm just really nervous for this upcoming cycle BECAUSE of that RC. I don't know why I freaked out today. YIKESSSS!!! 🙁

Thanks all..

the maximum minimum (if that even makes sense lol) of cutoffs that i have seen of dental schools is 17 for each section, but and an 18 overall average!

In other words, your fine! 🙂 And from their stats, Harvard would seem not far off, i would worry more about your GPA than your 17 in RC...which isnt deadly lol

Give the schools a quick email. You'll get a better answer from them then you'll get from any of us.

Your DAT score is great by the way. I wouldn't worry TOO much about it. If you're happy with NYU, in my opinion you're an almost shoo in for that school.

Yeah, I plan on calling them instead of email just for confidentiality purposes. And thanks! I'm pleased with the sciences; overall, I don't think I did bad--just the RC.

according to this (sorry doc toothache, beat ya to the punch)

the RC cutoff is just a "myth"... only 1 school has RC of 18 cutoff (ind)

Is it really a myth? 😕 A lot of people seem to be talking about cutoffs. It seems that several schools have certain cutoffs from their FAQs. Though some schools say they don't have a minimum, humor has it that those schools still have cutoffs. I checked doc toothache's excel spreadsheet but it seems that MOST schools consider RC to be very important, but of course, the AA and TS have higher significance.

you've already made the decision to not-retake (a very wise decision)... so what difference does it make if you "hear" schools have cutoffs.

There is no real evidence that schools apply a RC cutoff. And its true that it is the single most important non-average category but.... with your GPA+AA+TS, that 17 isn't going to give you trouble...

If you REALLY wanna put your mind at ease, instead of thinking about a retake, start thinking about applying to more schools (safety schools)... Aim at 15+ and I assure you, you'll get accepted somewhere (almost 100% guarantee)

if youre really concerned, the only way youre going to truly put your mind at ease is if you call those schools individually and inquire about your situation.

im inclined to agree with everyone else here that it wont be an issue, but caling the schools and hearing it "straight from the horses mouth," so to speak, will ease your nerves more than anyone on this board.

just my $0.02, hope your applications go well.

You always provide very insightful advice and thank you, dentalWorks. I'm also planning on applying to UC schools (I live in NY), Stonybrook and Buffalo. So far I think I have around 10 schools. Your assurance alleviates some of the nerves but I'll call them up.

Thanks, 1800RAW. I hope your applications go well too. I'll repost when I hear some news so all can know!!!

Among the schools you mentioned, Harvard and UCLA care a lot about RC, the other ones will get you though.

Seems like it because of their averages. Columbia doesn't quite look at it much? I asked a couple of my friends in dental school about it and they said not to worry but admissions is getting more and more competitive because of people scoring high on the DAT these days, so blah.
