So what happens after you get in? Do most ppl grad. dental school and become dentists... or are there alot of ppl who can't handle it and quit?

I heard it depends on different schools. If you go to NYU, people drop out.

By far and away most people go on to graduate. I'd speculate that nationally the graduation rate is 98-99% (which would include a minor percentage who have to extend their studies into the summer in order to finish clinic requirements).

At some schools the drop-out number is higher than other schools, but the overall percentages should be about the same from school to school when viewed over a period of time.

Dental school just isn't that hard, although it can be demanding. It isn't like you are learning material that you just can't understand. THAT can be depressing, dental school is simple stuff, and often quite a bit of minutia.

i was told that IUSD, the avg of people dropping out after the 1st semester is 2. with that said, i know for a fact that noone has dropped out of our school for the past 2 classes.

like Gavin said, dental is is demanding and anyone can be successful. although not always as easy as some people think it is.

i think that makes alot of sense. haha i think its opposite for med school? :: shruggs ::

I read the mission statement at my school (University of Kentucky), and it states as one of its goals to graduate at least 95% of the students that attend. I am a second year and so far out of my class of 54, 2 have dropped out so far. One failed out, but is allowed to come back after retaking some classes, and one quit 2 weeks into my first year before we had even taken any tests.

I think the average graduation rate at IUSD is in the neighborhood of 95%, and that includes everyone who leaves the school, not just those dismissed for academics.

(Incidentally, Ahmad, whoever told you the bit about your class & mine is wrong. We've lost two people over the past year and a half; one at the very beginning of first year, and another last fall, plus one more student who has taken a medical leave of absence this year and will rejoin with the class of 2008 next fall.)

hmmmm,

i was told by someone from the admissions. i am aware of the person on leave of absence for medical reasons. i think thats a rare situation.

i know a lot of people will be looking forward to having that student in class of 2008 if you know what i mean. lol

best friend is a 4th yr at Michigan, his 3rd yr, one guy dropped out, and 2nd yr i think 2 people dropped out.
I think its rare anywhere and most who do come to the conclusion that this is not for them.
Noone has dropped out so far 4th yr in his class, now that would be plain stupid to do!! 😀

It's intereting to know why those people drop out.
