Hello,
I am going to be starting the Indiana University School of Dentistry on early July.
It kind of sucks because most of other school starts on August. 😛

I have some questions before I become so overwhelmed
with worries and anxiety. I am so worried I couldn't even sleep
thinking about it lately.

I have read many comments about D1 experience,
but there was much more negative input especially in Indiana University dental school
about triple jump exam.

1. First of all, what is the triple jump exam?

2. What do Indiana University school of Dentistry do during July and August as a summer session?

3. how is the D1 student life is like (especially in IU dent)? T
hey told us to collect real extracted teeth before we come to school
on July and I thought it was kind of funny but wondering
why we have to collect those (shouldn't they provide those or some?).

4. do you think I can spend time with my significant other
at least most of Saturdays? That person is about 1.5 hrs away from Indy.
I hope I could.

5. do you think it is wise to take part I board exam
right after the freshman year as Indiana University dental school students?
Because many other schools encourage students to take it
after freshman year and yet Indiana dental school does not until
after sophomore year. And on top of that, I heard the only
summer off would be the after the freshman year so I don't know
if it is wise to spend my ONLY FREE TIME preparing part I board exam. 😕

6. is there some Korean students at Indy or Indiana University dental school?
I wish I won't get homesick and I need some ground support from
people from where I came from hopefully in addtion to
non-korean fellow dental students. 😛

:help: Help me ! ! ! And Thank you for your any input ! ! !

You might want to specify what the I stands for, because there might be a few schools that fit that.

Now I have specified IU dental school as
Indiana University dental school.

I could not imagine IU could stand for something else as well
other than Indiana University. 😛

Now, can anyone give me some answers please ! ! !
Any input would be appreciated ! ! !
And you do not have to be Indiana dental student, either.
Please help me out to prepare the scary first year.
I would be appreciated ! ! ! Thanks.

Hi I am a current D1 dental student at IUSD and hopefully I can answer some of your questions.

Hello,
I am going to be starting the Indiana University School of Dentistry on early July.

1. First of all, what is the triple jump exam?

you may consider TJE as individual PBL section instead of having a group of 5-6 ppl discussing the case. TJE is composed by 3 phase. Phase I (20mins): develop different hypothesizes with reasonings and build up your learning issues with the materials given. Phase II (2 hours): research your learning issues. Phase III (20mins): present your research, further LIs, and self-assessment. This year we have a practice TJE in fall semester and 2 formal TJEs in spring. You have to pass 2 of them in order to proceed to D2. It is pass/fail but does not affect your grades. You will have to remediate with the examiner if you failed (discuss ways to improve), and retake either only phase I or whole TJE depends on your previous performance.

2. What do Indiana University school of Dentistry do during July and August as a summer session?

Well we did Head & Neck anatomy, tooth morphology, history of dentistry, and ethics. You may want to buy several sets of scrub beforehand because you have to open up cadavers for the anatomy class. You will also do wax-up for TM down in the lab.

It may be tough for the first couple months with the crazy bi-weekly exams that cover 10 times more material than your undergrad. You will soon get used to them and survive. For the extracted teeth, we actually only did 2 projects with them for resin and glass ionomer restorations (2 incisors + 1 molar). You may borrow teeth from others if you can't collect them. I am sure some of the classmates will have whole jar of them.

4. do you think I can spend time with my significant other
at least most of Saturdays? That person is about 1.5 hrs away from Indy.
I hope I could.

it is possible. I have a classmate going back home for family gathering every week, and he is 4 hours away. It is all about time management.

5. do you think it is wise to take part I board exam
right after the freshman year as Indiana University dental school students?
Because many other schools encourage students to take it

after sophomore year. And on top of that, I heard the only

I can't answer this question. It all depends how well you are prepared for the board exam. One of the friends in D2 took it in March (sometime before the summer) and he passed. Some people tend to take it in summer.

6. is there some Korean students at Indy or Indiana University dental school?
I wish I won't get homesick and I need some ground support from
people from where I came from hopefully in addtion to

In D1 class of 2012 we have about 10 Asians, I think 3 of them are Koreans. Don't worry ppl here are very friendly and nice.

:help: Help me ! ! ! And Thank you for your any input ! ! !

Yup, people are very friendly, especially mr. Paulee1983 (since we're classmates now).. LOL..

Anyway, don't worry.. you'll be fine..

Goodluck! See you this fall semester! 🙂

Triple Jump Exams are no big deal. Everything is explained to you in detail so there is nothing to worry about. I only study on weekends when there is an exam the next Friday or Monday. Of course if you're trying to specialize it will require more of your time.
