Hi everyone!

I'm waiting on my financial aid package from NYU but I was wondering in the meantime--where is the best place to get private loans for the difference not covered by federal loans (tuition and living expenses)? I don't have the best credit score so preferably a more lenient company.

Thank you!

You don't need private loans as you can cover everything using federal student loans. You'll receive between $40,500 - $47,167 in Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan funding and can cover the rest (cost of attendance less your Direct Unsub) using the Grad PLUS.

Thank you so much for your answers everyone! The problem is my credit history most likely will not allow me to qualify for GradPLUS loans that's why I'm not sure what to do

I was wondering what your stats were for getting into NYU if you don't mind me asking 🙂

What exactly is the the problem with your credit history? Credit standards on the Grad PLUS are much more lenient than private loans. You will not qualify for a private loan without a cosigner if you can't even be approved for a Grad PLUS.

I'll reemphasize what previous posters already mentioned. Unsubsidized Grad PLUS loans are not only easier to get, but also lower interest rates compared to private loans, this includes bank loans. I currently own different checking accounts and a credit score of 720-750. The lowest interest rate these banks will offer was 9-11%. Even if you have assets that can be used as collateral, especially million dollar houses, the interest rates still won't be competitive to take.

Just my 2 cents. Don't use private loans and pay off your highest interest debt first (i.e. credit card bills).
