Hi there,

I am in the process of applying to dental school and came across this statement from Detroit Mercy's Dental program website:

"Please note prerequisites should be completed within 5 years of the application date. Candidates whose prerequisites are older than 5 years at the time of application are advised to retake these courses, preferably at a 4-year institution. "

Is this something that applies to all or most Dental programs? Because I do have coursework that is older than 5 years.

Thank you for your help in advance.

A fair amount of schools expect coursework to be completed within 5 years. Some are okay with up to 10. You should do your due diligence and check every school you plan on applying to, and if you can’t find it, email/call their admissions. This is a lot of money to apply, so just make sure you’re doing your homework.

You can ask UDM if they’d make an exception, but if they say no, and other schools say no, you will most likely need to retake.

The typical policy is a 5-year window. Contact the schools to see if exceptions can be made on an individual basis.
