  1. Medical Student
I am a pre-med student considering transitioning to dental school. Here is my background:

I graduated with a B.S. in Economics and after taking a year off to volunteer, do ECs, and do research, I came back to complete pre-med requirements as a post-bac student. After extensive research, I am starting to think dental school is a better track for me. I have always had admiration for the field especially since it made my life better.

I have a 3.7 cumulative gpa and a 3.78 science gpa. Does dental school consider math a science? I know med schools do.

What else should I know?

Math is a science.

Go shadow a couple of dentists or so and see if it supports your thoughts on dentistry. An orthopaedic surgeon made my life better, so I thought the same. When I went to shadow an orthopaedic surgeon, it was not what I thought it would be.

What made you want to become an Otolaryngologist? What is it about dentistry that overrides those reasons?

I would also recommend you to shadow a few dentist. So you can actually get to see what it is that dentists do on a day to day basis and whether it is something that interests you.

What kind of extensive research did you do?
What was it that you found out?

A wise man once told me that the only difference between a doctor and a dentist is, "...they both have boats but a dentist gets to use theirs."

As others have suggested, shadowing is pretty important. If you are still in school, I recommend joining a pre-dental club, if your school has one. If they don't, make one. Make moves to show that you are actually interested in dentistry and know what you're getting into, not just interested in using your boat.

My path is similar to yours; I started a post-bacc after working in the business world to get into health care. My initial choice was to become a medical doctor, and not until working with MD's/DO's and shadowing dentists, DPT's, and optometrists did I realize that I fit best pursuing dentistry. This is normal, and it is good you found out now instead of deciding after you started your grad school of choice.

Continue to shadow dentists to validate your findings and check on which pre-reqs you need as I found dental schools can require a few more pre-reqs (depending on the school of course).

Good luck.
