Greetings,
I learned that some states (Washington State, New Mexico, Kansas, Ohio, and Vermont) are discussing the need for Dental Therapists as a means for low income and less fortunate communities to get dental care. But ADA lobbyists are pushing back against it. Regardless of the debate and who is right or wrong. I would like to know more about Dental Therapists. It might be an alternate option for foreign-trained dentists who are struggling to join a DDS program or may be for older dentists who don’t want to spend years on getting dental license.

Does anyone know the education track to become a Dental Therapist? License Requirements? Or any other info that you like to share about it.

Thanks!

I want to add that Dental Therapists can perform simple procedures, doing cleanings, filling cavities, pulling teeth and the like. They don't have to work under the supervision of a dentist. The only states that I know currently allow Dental Therapists to practice are Alaska and Minnesota, but more states to come.

The only reason I am venturing to voice an opinion on this is to let you know that no matter what level of mid level provider training you get ,1. you will always be expected to work under the supervision of a licensed dentist. The level of supervision may vary but nonetheless there's supervision.
2- you can do preventive and primary restorative services- yes, true! extractions only on PRIMARY TEETH.

That being said , good luck with your pursuits!
