Is it possible to make an average Per Year of approx $400,000 over the course of your whole career as a dentist (from start to finish)?

Also what do you think about the future for the occupation for Dentistry?

I am currently a junior in college and pre-dental and I would like to know how much the income potential is for a dentist. I hear a lot of conflicting views. One is that dentists can make $120,000 to over a million. The other career option is doing some type of a MBA program or some type of investment banking. However I like to work with people and make them feel better. In the process of doing so I want to make a lot of money and live a good lifestyle, which I am willing to work hard to achieve. In addition I like to own my bussiness where I can be my own boss.

I enjoy science and I think the feild of dentistry to be interesting, however Money and lifestyle are important factors to me when choosing a career. Where I live, unfortunately a household income of $95,000 is just barely making it for a family. (Long Island, NY)

According to the ADA the average is approx 210,000 for a dentist owning all or part of their practice. Obviously some make more and some make less. So I would like to see some of your insights into this topic. Also how easy is it to buy into a practice or become a partner? and how much can you expect to take home out of your production? I would like to preferably be in a big city-type area.

So I know this is a sensitive topic for some. Please do not post if you think I "shouldn't be interested in the money" and post some type of irrelevant response. I am looking for good candid responses, preferably of practicing dentists, anyone who personally knows a dentist's particular income situation or someone who has done reliable research on the topic. Also please cite some type of source, whether it be a person off the street, your dentist, a dentist, someone who knows a dentist, etc.

I greatly will appreciate the responses to this post. It may help me to avoid doing something dumb like not go into dentistry since I don't think the income potential is there.

I would think that the reverse income of someones philanthropy would make sense as to how the numbers add up. If you look at the education level and the PDF's that ADA hands out, it will show a correlation with the monetary gains in the world as a Dentist. Not only will it show that, but it will also show the future of Dental Health as stated by the AMA which is a huge governing board towards the future of Dental politics. That being said, I do urge you to look into these governing facts and proceed with caution into the dental healthcare realm.

dude STOP POSTING THIS..U HAVE LIKE 5 DIFFERENT THREADS..GIVE IT A REST

ummm no!! go into opthalmology if you want money + lifestyle 🙂

OP - it's not a sensitive topic per se. We're all in dental school so we can become dentists so we can get jobs so we can... make money! But saying you're a junior in college choosing between dentistry and investment banking shows that you have absolutely no idea what you want to do or why.

I'll say this much, if you're looking for the most money, don't go into dentistry. There are tons of quicker, easier ways to make more money. You can be financially comfortable playing tooth doctor, but if you burn out because you don't like the work, I guarantee you won't make those millions you were hoping for.

This is not the pre-dental forum where money is the root of all evil.

For a dental student indulged in student loans upwards of quarter million+ dollars at ridiculous interest rates, money is well..........kind of important.

However I like to work with people and make them feel better.

You can do that with any jobs.

Dentistry is a lucrative career. With experience and knowledge of private practice, it is not diffcult for a dentist to successfully run an existing practice or start up practice. The overhead of a general dentist practice ranges from 55-65% with production of around $580,000 (the production # is what I can remember from the ADA survey, I may be wrong)

Dentistry just like any other profession is a job. But be warned, for some it is a disgusting job that surprisingly might be in an episode of "dirty jobs." With exception to taste, all of your traditional five senses will be stimulated. All in a bad way. I suggest you shadow couple of general dentists and a specialists preferably a periodontist 😉
