Dentistry Other Than Private Practice

Hey everyone,

I was wondering what are some alternatives to practicing dentistry other than private practice? I'm talking about clinics, military, freelance (if that exists)? Anything you can enlighten me with would really help.

Also, how much more or less could you expect to make in that particular field? As a reference, the average dentist makes 156,000 in my area.

Basically, I've seen how stressful private practice can be and I'd like to consider some other options.

As for Military, I won't bother trying to regurgitate the copious amount of information on your question that exists in the Military forum, so take a peek there if you are interested. I myself plan on a military career, but I am fairly certain I will like it as I have 6 years prior service already.

If I weren't doing military? I wouldn't do private practice, at least not opening my own. An uncle of mine hated private practice (regardless of the income), so he first worked in a prison and said they were some of the best patients he'd ever had. He currently works at Pearl Harbor, so it's a kind of federal job, not sure of the pay scale and benefits, but he's happy! So there are non-military positions at military and other federal facilities to consider. You could go work for the FBI or CIA or something weird. Hospitals hire dentists.

Based on your earning potential you listed, I'd think most of these positions would pay less, unless A) you've got plenty of experience, or B) you are a certain specialty (This is a GREAT thread regarding this, military though, check it out: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=726584)

Of course, you expect to make less not doing private practice, right? 🙂
