cuz some people's mouths are smelly

...that's why we use good ol' surgical masks 😀
and it prevents the patients blood squirting in your mouth too.

i remember when i was shadowing, it was a lil gushy, so the dentist had to wear his mask - properly & firmly, and wore a bib himself, so he wouldn't be all bloody. 😉

i was told to start up a thread saying how dentistry stinks...so that people will start declining their offers....i hope i'm doing waitlisters a favor! hahaah

There are many different other hole in a human body that smell by far worse then a mouth. Don't get people tricked into this, fruity

Even a physician sometimes gets a full exposure to nasty smelly places, especially while doing physical exams

the more you look at it, the more you get hypnotized... 🙄

Speaking of Masks ---here is a random weird problem I encountered recently when I got to work a little closer with the dentist I had to put on the whole face mask thing...anyway I have a really weak stomach...

Not for blood or anything like that...

But sitting there with that mask on made me really hot and I got light headed and dizzy and had to run to the bathroom and puke. It was absolutely terrible. I felt like I do when I get motion sickness in the car or if you have ever gotten heat stroke...

Anyway you all probably think I am weird but my dentist said sometimes he just wears the faceguard instead depending on the procedure becuase he gets hot and he said alot of students have fans in their labs when they work because of the same reason?

Anyone have input on this? JW

The first day of pathobiology clinic I asked the instructor if there was going to be a problem since i really dislike looking in people's mouths. I thought it was a clever joke, but i have a feeling the instructors thought it was rather cliche.

Having worked in burn units, emergency department and ICU's I can tell you that what you experienced is not at all uncommon. One burn unit I worked at used to refer to that as "the intern swoon" because a lot of medical students would faint, puke, get lightheaded or some combination of those three from having a mask on while working in there. A lot of people become suddenly claustrophobic when they have to have anything cover their mouth and nose, and you add to that a warm environment, stress and potentially strong smells it's a recipe to make some puke or pass out.

Nothing to be ashamed of or embarassed about. It' happens to almost everyone.

Oh and I'll take any smell emanating from even a crackhead's mouth over the smell of a burn victim with wound infections any day of the week.
