dentistry vs. optometry

hi guys,

I have been applied dental school for three years, and not get in. I thinking about optometry next year.
- could anyone let me know what to do ? is optometry more difficult to get in compare to Dent., I graduated in 2007. will it be a cut off. what school easy to get in, honestly i do not care where to go. thanks to you all.

LOL. Dentistry and optometry are very different. Optometry certainly is not a substitute for dentistry.

Why not apply to a dental hygiene program, if you like dentistry so much and not qualified to get into dental school.

Keep trying to go to dental school. Christ, go to Guadalajara if you have to. I know a DDS who went to school in MX and came back and did a residency in the US. You might not be the same dentist as the guy who went to UCLA, but I'd rather be a board-acceptable dentist than any form of optometrist given the state of optometry right now. I've got several friends who are dentists and let's just say they're not going to be trading their dental degrees in for an OD anytime soon.

Unless you want to jump onto a train that's heading for a brick wall a few miles down the track, I'd stick with dental. It won't beeasy to get in with a 2.7, though. In any case, get ready for an onslaught of pre-optometry students who will try to sell you the degree.

Or you could just get a government job and ride the gravy-train all the way through retirement.

It is going to be very tough to get in with 2.7 into most schools. But, if you try the newer schools you have a much better chance.

- I think i am ok to continue dental filed, but i am not sure if i have a chance.

Well, there are those 3 new schools. One of the posters is probably right to say you have a better chance getting in to them.

But I've read comments on here that practices are boycotting the hiring of optometrists from these schools. So commercial would be your destiny. But hey, that's what it appears to be for ALL the schools, eh? 😉

i don't mean to be rude or condescending, but you need to work on your grammar and spelling. If English is a second language, it is a little more reasonable, but this can be a major deterrent to your applications if you write like this on applications.

Bobu,

Never "settle" for optometry because you can't make it into dentistry. Make sure you are switching potential health fields because you have thoroughly researched the work involved and whether it suits you personally.
