Question about Denver away rotations.... I looked on their website and they say that they accept applications up to 1 year before you'd be scheduled to rotate there. So if I wanted to rotate in Sept of 2010 (theoretically) I would want to apply there this September. But by then I'll only have a few clinical grades and my Step 1 score in! Is this normal? And am I gonna need to like spend my sparse MS3 "spare time" hanging out in the ER so I can get a letter of rec for the rotation from an EM attending?

How the %#@#$ do kids get a decent application in a year early if they weren't planning on being ER since they were a fetus?

Sorry for the question + whine 🙄

Do they ask for a LOR in their application?

And yes, often those of us who like EM spend our spare time in MS3 hanging out in the ED.

Just call them. One of the secretaries acts as a visiting student coordinator and could give you the scoop.
Loads of students rotate there. Totally worth it, really good rotation. It might be more competitive for the prime (earlier) rotations.

1) They don't accept them that early, they first need to determine when rotations begin and end, and that scheduling comes from CU. You can't apply for a Sept rotation in 2010 until they know know that it starts on Sept 2nd, for example. This year they found out about dates in early March. You will have most of your clinical grades by that time.

2) A lot of people spend their spare time in the ED shadowing. I had to because we don't get ED time until MS4. It was an afternoon or two here and there, but they know my name and my interests. And it reconfirmed my desire to be in the ED.

3) A lot of people ask to do projects during MS1-2. It's not clinical time, but it is a way to get involved in the department and show interest. It's also a way to build up that CV.

4) Talk to your schools's EM PD. Find ways to get hooked in. EM interest clubs, research, etc.

5) LORs are not required for DH aways; I thought folks went to DH to get a LOR. But you do need a background check for their app. Check out their website for all of the info. Their coordinator is very helpful.
