I was wondering if anyone else had info on the various deposits required by DO schools. They seem to be so much more (and often non-refundable) compared to MD schools. I am worried about getting multiple acceptances and wanting to put down more than one deposit. Granted, this would be a very happy problem to have...but at the same time very expensive.

I have looked on school websites, but most don't seem to post this info.

I have only interviewed one place so far, but does anyone else know about other schools' deposit fees?

Touro-NV : $2000, 90% refundable

Don't quote me, but I thought I saw somewhere that WVSOM was around $2000 for the first deposit and $1000 dor the second. I could be wrong though. I think I saw that on either their website or somewhere in the Interview Feedback site.

Wow you get that much time to pay the deposit, I thought it had to be turned in, in a month.

All of the Touro's are $2000 due within 2 weeks of decision. NYCOM is $1500 and NSU is $750 for the first deposit, then $1250 for the second deposit a few months later.

That's f*cking outrageous! Do they credit that towards your tuition once you start school? Where did you get this kind of $$$? Borrowing from family is not an option for me. Do people take out personal loans to pay for this?

Yup, they all go towards 1st yr tuition. It just sucks when you lose the deposit because you decided on a different school. As an anecdote, I lost a 2k deposit at Touro-NY and 2k at Nova, then went to nycom lol!

Tell me about it. I looked on LMU-DCOMs site and it is credited to your tuition($2000+). I think DO schools usually ask for more as students use them as backups if they don't get into their allo schools. I noticed that the deposits were considerably lower for allo schools as well. SIU school of medicine only asks for $150 bucks and it is refundable up until may of next year. I saw that the deposit at DCOM was non-refundable. Not much a problem for me, if I get into DCOM I am running with it .

I guess they are justified by doing this, I am sure it is a logistical nightmare when you accept so many students and have half of them withdraw, leaving you with the responsibility of filling them within tight time frames.

Oh man, that sucks :( Well, at least you're in school now. Just think, that $4000 is nothing compare to your 1st year tuition loan!

It sounds sick, but I want to be able to pay outrageous amounts of money for deposits and tuition because that would mean that I got in somewhere! :D

I believe PCOM's is 250 first, and then 2000 by April 15th. If accepted in the next round of applications ('09) I will put the first deposit down and hope to god I have an acceptance by April 15th. If not, PCOM here I come :D.

Just interviewed at AZCOM. Their deposit is $1000 (nonrefundable) due in 3-4 weeks after acceptance.

The DO schools do have higher deposit amount which is annoying if you have not yet decided which school you would like to attend and have multiple acceptances etc.. However, consider:
1. The time for you to pay the deposit gets shorter and shorter the later you get in the app. cycle. Apply early and you have several months to pay the deposit.
2. The higher cost forces you to make your decison faster and possibly free up seats that another applicant is trying to get (imagine if you were waiting to find out if you would get pulled off the waitlist and someone else was holding an acceptance because he was waiting to hear from another school)
3. There are fewer DO schools so less to choose from and therefore schools believe the you should apply to those schools only which you want to attend (not schools you just want an acceptance from as a fall back)

I hate the high costs for DO schools but as someone who was on a waitlist, I can see why they have them that way.

Man I pretty much applied to 2 schools.. KCUMB and OSU-COM.. I'm not liking how slow OSU is being.. They are my first choice, but if accepted I will probably pay the 1000 to KCUMB to hold my seat, then forfiet it if accepted to OSU.....

My interview is Oct 22 for KC so if I can get into the first of OSU's I should be alright. OSU's fee is $100.00

TCOM's deposit is.... get ready...... $0! The one and only DO school with no deposit, it relieves a little extra stress on the wallet after applying and paying for interviews!
